Life and Art: The Greenwich Paintings of John Henry Twachtman at the Greenwich Historical Society closely studies the Cincinnati-born artist’s depictions of his home in Connecticut where he lived from 1890-1899.
The works themselves are so lovely that the challenge here was to determine a gallery layout and wall color that would make them shine as well as to arrange didactic information that’s engaging and easy to understand. The typography was established in the pre-existing catalogue and needed to be translated into a large-scale exhibition setting.

“Working with Johanna on the design for our exhibition of paintings by American Impressionist John Henry Twachtman was a great pleasure. Johanna brought a sharp insight and design sense to the project, which is exactly what we needed to create a sublime gallery atmosphere for visitors to view a set of beautiful artworks. Her thoughtful approach to communicating complex subjects was crucial for this project, as our exhibit plan needed a comprehensive graphic to help visitors understand the architectural history of the artist’s house, paired with examples of photographs and other primary resources used to determine that history. Johanna’s layouts were incredibly precise and impeccably organized, making the installation easy for our art handling team. She is well-organized, keeps projects on-track, and fun to work with too!
