LIFE: Six Women Photographers, features the work of six prominent women photographers whose iconic work for LIFE magazine helped create modern photojournalism as it depicted a quickly-evolving world. It features more than 70 images by Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971), Marie Hansen (1918-1969), Martha Holmes (1923-2006), Lisa Larsen (ca. 1925-1959), Nina Leen (ca. 1909-1995) and Hansel Mieth (1909-1998)—the only women employed as full-time photographers by LIFE between the late 1930s and the early 1970s.
The exhibition was organized and originally presented at the New York Historical Society. The fonts and colors were established, but I needed to create new walls and incorporate casework to fit all the pieces; this space was considerably smaller than the original. At NYHS, the red was incorporated as a band that encircled the gallery wall. Building on that, I decided to put the red only behind the graphic reproductions and use it to highlight each artists’ name in a way that invoked the iconic cover.
I also created a suite of brochures, invitations, and promotional signage for this exhibition.
